Ammon A "Al" Swartzentruber was born to Andrew (Andy) Swartzentruber and Amanda C.Wengerd Swartzentruber, members of the Old Order Amish Community near Fredericksburg, Ohio on March 18, 1930. He was the third of six children. On June 1, 1958 he was united in marriage with Erdine Fay Hochstetler of Millersburg, Ohio. They adopted a daughter in 1968, Brooke Renee Stratten. He worshiped at The First Baptist Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Al loved God, his family and friends. He enjoyed pausing often to appreciate Gods creations in nature, reading and playing Nintendo with his son in law William A. Rouse (1967-2013), going for drives and Saturday morning breakfast outings with friends. After earning his high school diploma he earned both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Education Administration from the University of Cincinnati. Later he earned both BS and MS Degrees in Microbiology from Ohio State University. While doing Graduate work he taught middle school science for the Cincinnati Ohio School System and was very active in teachers organizations. After 10 years of teaching he began a career as a Research Microbiologist for the Food and Drug Administration in Washington D.C. in 1970. In 1981 he transferred to the cancer research center, National Center for Toxicological Research in Arkansas where he retired. He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother in law Perry and Lydia (Oswald) Hochstetler; son in law; brother and sister in law, Eli and Katie Swartzentruber; sister Nettie and former brother in law George Christner; sister in law, Lenora Mae Pipher Swartzentruber; former sister in law Jewel Earls Swartzentruber; infant sister Anna; niece, Peggy Swartzentruber and nephew Laban Barkman, Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 55 years, Erdine; daughter, Brooke Rouse of Alta; sister, Mary and brother in law Atlee Barkman; brother, Joe Swartzentruber; as well as many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.
