Brian Jay Reiss

Brian J. Reiss, age 57, of Holstein, passed away on Friday, July 30, 2021 at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center of Cherokee.  A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein.  Rev. Paul D. Egger will officiate the prayer service. Graveside services will be held on Monday, August 9, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at the L’Eau Qui Court Cemetery of Niobrara, NE.

Brian Jay Reiss was born February 29, 1964 in Cherokee, Iowa to John and Geraldine (Welling) Reiss.  He graduated from Galva Holstein High School.

Brian worked for Holstein Sanitation and truly enjoyed his job.  He was a fan of Dale Earnhardt, Elvis Presley and Hank Williams, Jr.

Brian was a man of deep compassion, care and encouragement to all who knew him.  Brian loved people as they were, always with a quirky sense of humor and some sass in his steps.  He was a loyal son, a devoted friend and a loving father.  The infectious smile he always wore and the way he could always manage to make anyone feel special will always be deeply cherished.  He was an amazing “Pop-Pop” to his grandchildren, always encouraging them to not stay angry forever.  He’d get down on the floor and play games with them, listen to all of their wonky stories and contagiously giggle with them about silly songs, memes or funny cat videos.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth and husband David Scholten of Ireton, IA and their two children Alexander and Gracelyn; his son, Jonathan and wife Ashley DeYoung of Holstein, IA and their children, Somer, Wallace and Harrison; daughter, Joelle DeYoung of Ivanhoe, VA and her son, Maximus.  He is also survived by his brothers, Charlie of Holstein, IA and Gordy and wife Sandy of Rockwell City; significant other, Angie Breyfogle of Holstein, IA; nephews, Aaron (Ashley) of Ida Grove, IA, Charlie (Donna) of Council Bluffs, Adam (Bethany) of Rockwell City and Kevin (Brandi) of Holstein, IA; and several great-nieces and nephews and cousins.

Brian was preceded in death by his parents; a brother and sister; his grandparents; an uncle and several cousins.
