Delmer D. Bruns was born February 21, 1926 in Galva, Iowa, to George H. and Sylvia (Kretzmeir) Bruns. He had two older brothers, Leslie and Orin and two younger brothers, George Jr. and Waldo. Delmer attended school at Fairview to the north of Alta, where he graduated in 1943. He was a coxswain in the Navy’s Seabees in the Pacific during World War II. He worked as a trucker when he returned. He married Phyllis Holstein on September 19, 1948. To this union four children were born: Gary, Douglas, Ralene and Brian. Delmer was an active member in the Alta Community. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Alta. He enjoyed discussions with friends over coffee for many years. In his younger years, Delmer enjoyed bowling and square dancing. He also had fun playing cards. Delmer and Phyllis wintered in Mission, TX for 13 years. He was intrigued by the vegetable harvest and design of cotton pickers. Delmer was a farmer. He added many acres to the business though the years. He enjoyed tinkering with machinery and improvements to their farm. His family built the home of his design in 1968. The granary setup on the farm was also a source of pride. Delmer was president of the Alta Coop for years. Delmer was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Leslie and George Jr. He is survived by his wife Phyllis of Alta; their children, Gary (Sharon) of Council Bluffs, IA, Douglas (Carolyn) of Alta, Ralene of Waterloo and Brian (Lori) of Dell Rapids, SD; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and brothers, Orin and Waldo.
