Deva G. Sutherland was born October 30, 1919 in Pomeroy, Iowa to Bernard and Mabel (Passow) Behrends. She was a triplet and had four other siblings. She attended the Lutheran parochial school in Pomeroy, which was the basis of her strong Christian faith. Deva graduated from beauty school in Fort Dodge and later worked for a defense contractor in Seattle, WA during WWII.
Deva met Wayne Sutherland while working at a beauty salon in Schaller. They were married on May 25, 1946. The couple was blessed with two sons, Keith and Kent.
In addition to her life’s work and enjoyments on the farm, Deva worked for one of the first Head Start programs in Ida County. She later worked for Mr. Ken’s Salon and Spa in Ida Grove as a fitness instructor and provided health and fitness information on a weekly radio program. She truly enjoyed working in her vegetable garden and had beautiful flower gardens throughout her property.
In her later years, Deva found enjoyment in quilting, and her family and friends were the recipients of her beautiful hand-made quilts. Deva was appreciated for being an amazing cook and baker- no one could bake cookies like “Grammie.” Deva enjoyed her life and had many interests. Deva did not like horseback riding.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Ladies Aide, Cook Merry Gardeners and the Red Hat Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and four siblings.
Deva leaves a family who loved her, and she had many wonderful friends. Survivors include her sons, Keith and wife Patricia Sutherland of Sioux City, IA and Kent and wife Brenda Carns of Ft. Collins, CO; grandchildren, Josh, Will, Ashley, and Elizabeth Sutherland of Colorado and two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Cora.
