Donald L. Sorensen

March 2, 1923 — September 26, 2014

Don was born in Holstein on March 2, 1923 to William and Josephine Sorensen. After graduating from Holstein High School, he served in the U.S. Army in the China Burma India Theater (CBI) during World War II. He then received degrees from Iowa State University and the University of Iowa.

He married Hulda Freymiller in 1956. The couple honeymooned in Scandinavia. They have one son, William “Bill”.

As a guidance counselor and science teacher, Don worked in schools in Tama, Pleasant Valley, LeClaire, and Moorhead, Iowa. He was a charter member and an elder of Christ's Family Church in Davenport. Don loved photography, and he created multimedia slide shows of the wildflowers of Iowa, the Loess Hills, and Rochester Cemetery. He was passionate about preserving natural prairies. He was a Scoutmaster in Tama and later in LeClaire for many years.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and siblings: Josephine “Josie’” William “Bill,” Sidney “Sid,” Merle and James.

He is survived by his wife and son. Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Helen Sorensen of El Dorado Springs MO; nephews Daniel (Shirley) Sorensen of Alamogordo NM and Jim Sorensen of Holstein IA; nieces Mary (Wayne) Nicodim of New Baltimore MI, Becky (Tony) Koger and Nancy (Gary) Esry, both of El Dorado Springs MO.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful team of Hospice Compassus, who cared for Don in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to his memorial fund may be made through Christ's Family Church.
