Evelyn Amanda Martha Braunschweig was born on May 31, 1923, along with her twin sister Erma, at her family’s century farm in rural Aurelia, Afton Township, to Henry and Clara (Jurgens) Westphal. The twins were the second and third additions to the Westphal family, joining their older sister Melvina and later younger brothers Ervin, Arlen, and John. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Afton Township. She attended the rural country school through the sixth grade after which time she stayed home to help her mother care for her younger siblings.
On June 16, 1946, she was united in marriage to Theodore (Ted) Braunschweig at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Evelyn and Ted’s marriage was blessed with six children, two of whom died in infancy. They raised their children while farming in Albert City and Alta. Evelyn served as a cook at Zion Lutheran School in rural Storm Lake, and also worked as a nurse’s aide at Buena Vista County Hospital. She always enjoyed attending her children’s school activities and athletic events.
Evelyn dearly loved her family and in later years was happiest rocking a grandchild or great-grandchild on her lap. She was an avid fan of Iowa Hawkeyes basketball and Alta basketball and baseball. She was also a long-time member of the Alta St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Ladies’ Aid.
Those left to cherish Evelyn’s memory include her son and daughter-in-law Jerry & Connie Braunschweig of Alta; son and daughter-in-law Randy & Brenda Braunschweig of Newell; son-in-law Steve Movall (husband of Connie) of Rembrandt; and daughter-in-law JoAnn Braunschweig (wife of Dan) of Laurens; eleven grandchildren and their spouses/significant others: Karen (Dwayne) Salmon; Brian Movall; Bruce Movall; David Movall; Jessica (Michael) Braunschweig-Norris; Jim (Heidi) Braunschweig; Adam Braunschweig; Shane (Jamie) Braunschweig; Josh (Jodi Vanden Bosch) Braunschweig; Jason Braunschweig; Shauna (Nate) Black; and fifteen great-grandchildren: Katrina, Rachel, Caden, Carter, Lennon, London, Willa, Grady, Emory, Haddy, Brady, Ellie, Jacey, Saif, and Hailee. Also left to remember her are her brother Arlen Westphal of Arizona; brother and sister-in-law John and Char Westphal of Humboldt; and sister-in-law Rosemary Westphal of Alta, as well as many dear friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ted; daughter Connie; and sons: Ronnie, James, and Dan; as well as her sisters and one brother.
