George was born July 16, 1925 at the family farm in Logan Township, Ida County, Iowa. He was the son of Purl and Flora (Scott) Vickery. He graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy. He was honorably discharged from the Navy to help on the farm, due to his father’s ill health.
George was united in marriage to Deloris Wood on September 27, 1947. They spent their married life farming until they retired to Holstein in 1987.
George served on several boards including Ida Grove School, Ida County Fair, Grinnell Mutual Insurance, Federal Land Bank, First United Methodist Church, and Holstein Country Club. He was a 50 year plus member of Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing cards, and playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Jean Neal, Betty Phelps, Mary Furlet, and Anne Eberle.
Survivors include his wife, Deloris, of Holstein, IA; sons, Douglas (Kathy) Vickery of Lander, WY, Scott (Patricia) Vickery of Orwell, OH; and daughter, Carol (James)Volkert of Huron, SD. Grandchildren include Kristin Vickery of Lander WY, Megan (Mel) Traughber of Lawrence, KS, Kyle Cozad of The Dalles, OR, Kris (Melanie) Cozad of Greenville, SC, Ryan Volkert of Huron, SD, and Sarah (Bret) Kahre of Wolsey, SD. George is also survived by his great crandchildren, Morgan, Madison, and Makenna Traughber; Benjamin, Jocelyn, and D’Arcy Cozad; and Kaitlyn and Clay Kahre; brother-in-laws, Merlin Rabe of Ida Grove, IA and Francis (Cheryl) Wood of Santa Teresa, NM; and sister-in-law Donna Schmidt of Battle Creek, IA.
