Gerald D. Hare was born June 9, 1945 in Battle Creek, Iowa to Arthur and Annabelle (Smethers) Hare. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. Gerald was raised in rural Ida County and attended school in Galva and Ida Grove. He graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1963. Upon graduation Gerald served in the Army National Guard for six years.
Gerald was united in marriage to Gloria Bugge on September 4, 1965. To this marriage three children were born: Loren, Troy and Lisa. On November 20, 1976 he was married to Colleen Fouts.
Gerald farmed in Ida County until 1974. He managed a grain farm in Plano, IL for 11 years, then returned to Ida Grove and worked for Midwest Industries for a couple of years. In 2005 he started trucking for his company, Hare Trucking which was leased to TK Trucking. After a couple of years he purchased his own grain truck which he drove until 2013 when he retired. Gerald was a member of the American Legion Dessel-Schmidt Post #225 of Holstein. He was a member of the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein where he was a deacon, an elder and on the church council.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his parents-in-law, Arnold and VaNita Fouts.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 38 years, Colleen of Holstein, IA; three children, Loren Hare of Ida Grove, IA, Troy (Lynn) Hare of Ida Grove, IA and Lisa (Jeff) Johnson of Cushing, IA; grandchildren, Nathan and Holly Hare, Marissa, Mandi, Bailey and Kade Hare, and Erin and Eric Johnson; great-grandson, Noah Hare; siblings, Richard (Shirley) Hare of Ida Grove, IA, Barb (Jerry) Gronau of Odebolt, IA and Larry (Dianne) Hare of Battle Creek, IA. He is also survived by his aunts, Martha Boyer of Anderson, IN, and Hilma Wittrock of Holstein, IA; uncle, Harley Fouts of Aurora, CO; and many nieces and nephews.
