Gladys Helen Todd was born on February 1, 1925, to Otto and Lillie (Meister) Todd on a farm north of Correctionville. When she was an infant, she moved with her parents to a farm north of Holstein. Gladys was the oldest of 13 children. She attended a country school until 8thgrade. She lived with her parents until her mother died in 1960. In 1963, she moved to a farm southeast of Quimby and was a housekeeper and caregiver for her father until his death in 1977. Gladys is a longtime member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein, where she was baptized and confirmed.Gladys had many interests and always wanted to keep busy. She raised a large garden, including African violets and a strawberry bed for many years. She enjoyed hunting for asparagus and sharing it with others. She loved taking long walks, ceramics, crocheting afghans and making tied fleece blankets for all of her nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed making quilts and embroidering pillows. Gladys was always a very willing babysitter for her many nieces and nephews when they were younger. She liked to play cards, do jigsaw puzzles and bake chocolate chip cookies. Gladys was a hostess for many of the holiday celebrations for her family and especially loved Christmas. For Easter, Gladys would color dozens of eggs and hide them all over her farmyard for her nieces and nephews to hunt, weather permitting. A highlight for Gladys was when she went with a group from her church to see the Oberammergan Passion Play that is held in Germany every two years.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Dale in infancy; her brothers, Ralph and Eugene “Pete”; and sisters, Agnes Boock, Rose Godbersen, and a brother-in-law, Leroy Boock; a niece, Valerie Dittmer; a great-nephew Skyler Todd; and a great-niece, Agnes Martin.
Her love for her family members will be remembered by many. Left to cherish her memory are her brothers, Don (Delores) of Washta, Clarence (Bernice) of Quimby, Darrel (Elvera) of Holstein, Franklin (Carolyn) of Holstein, Gail (Nancy) of Holstein, Ken (Jani) of Quimby and a sister Eva (Robert) Dittmer of Holstein.
