Helen K. Hintz was born August 23, 1922 in Sioux City, Iowa. She was placed in St. Anthony’s orphanage in Sioux City at the age of 4, where she stayed until completion of 8th grade. She then went to live with her oldest brother’s in-laws in Cushing, IA. Helen was united in marriage to Luverne Hintz on February 26, 1944 in Ida Grove, IA. They originally farmed south of Cushing, IA and moved into Cushing in 1953. Helen worked as a cook at the Cushing school for 26 years until she retired in 1984. The couple was blessed with four children. Helen and Luverne loved to dance and made many trips to area dance halls and fireman’s dances to enjoy the fox trot, waltz and polka. They also loved to fish and frequently went to Spirit Lake. Helen loved to play cards and bingo and stayed busy baking for her family. She was well known for the Peppernut cookies she made at Christmas time for family and friends and her loaves of cinnamon bread. One of her favorite activities was attending Bi-annual family reunions where the topic of discussion was always centered on the activities of her children and grandchildren. Often her great granddaughters would encourage her to allow them to stay with her in her room, as that was the highlight of their time at the event. They knew she was always up for a good game of cards and she always had “sugar free” candy. She had a remarkable ability to continually send birthday cards to all her children and grandkids. Short notes would always include some recent newspaper clipping about a former classmate, a recent death or some other event that she felt the family should know about. She never forgot to celebrate these events with family. Helen was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers, Clifford Foltz and Robert Foltz; sister, Margaret Stilwell; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hintz; and great-grandson, Thomas Tashjian.
