Helen M. Johnson

October 26, 1915 — September 2, 2015

Helen was born in Scott Township on October 26, 1915 to Marenus and Annie (Hanson) Peterson. She attended the Fairview School and graduated in 1933. She was united in marriage to Allie Johnson on November 1, 1933. To this union two children were born, Barbara and Burton “Butch.”

She was baptized and became a member of the Baptist Church. She loved her church and was very active as a Sunday school superintendant and teacher. She was president, secretary, and treasurer of the Ladies Aid and also sang in the choir. She joined the United Methodist church after the Baptist church closed. She was the secretary of the U.M.W. for 15 years.

Helen kept a diary and a black book for over 65 years and was called often for important information and dates. She loved to travel and live in her trailer. After her husband retired, they spent three months in Texas and three months in Minnesota fishing. She worked part time in the office in both places. She loved to crochet and knit and made several things for her family. She was involved in the Senior Citizen Dinner Date. Helen moved to Wel-Life in May 2008, then to Sunset Knoll on March 20, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Allie Johnson in September 1999; daughter, Barbara Nehring in 2010; two son-in-laws, Philip Hamand and Alvin Nehring; two brothers, Wesley Peterson and Rev. Virgil Peterson; sisters, Bernie Harding and Virginia Aldrich sister-in-law, Pauline Peterson; great-granddaughter, Christina Hamand; brother-in-laws, Charlie Harding and Hubert Fredrickson.

Helen is survived by her son, Burton “Butch” (Kaye) Johnson of Monmouth, IL; six grandchildren, Dale Hamand, Allen (Kim) Hamand, Cindy Hamand, Shane (Renee) Johnson, Todd Johnson, Graham (Amy) Johnson; six great-grandchildren, Philip (Megan) Hamand, Nicholas (Chelsea) Hamand, Emily Hamand, Christopher Hamand, Michael Johnson and Ashley Johnson; four great-great-grandchildren, Alexie, Aurora, Luci and Parker; brother-in-law, Thomas Aldrich of CA; sister-in-law, Velma Peterson of Storm Lake, IA.
