Surrounded by family and a few flies, Lane Dwight Tabke left his Moville family farm for the final time on July 18, 2024 after a six month bout with cancer. He was the best Grandpa–no baby was allowed to fall asleep anywhere but the crook of his arm and no harvest was complete without rides with him in the combine.

Born on April 12, 1954 in Sioux City, Iowa, Lane was a lifelong Woodbury County resident who devoted his efforts to the Tabke Family Farms and local organizations. After attending Western Iowa Tech, Lane settled in Moville as a farmer growing corn, soybeans, hogs, and cattle. Joining him in this journey was his wife of 50 years, Kathy. The two married in Bronson at the Elliot Creek Presbyterian Church on September 1, 1973.

Lane loved farming, but he especially loved it when he could get new machinery for the farm. He loved chrome and held a strict rule of never buying tires for a vehicle. He was able to enjoy several opportunities to literally drive his new tractors and combines off the manufacturing floor. He was also able to indulge in some vehicle highlights when he purchased a motorcycle to attend Sturgis, and a yellow Corvette convertible, all of which was accompanied by his love of Sawyer Brown, ELO, and Joan Jett.

Lane was proud of his community and family. He would spend his time off the farm at grandkid games, meets, plays, and concerts while also serving as the Chair of the Woodbury County Soil and Water Conservation Board, Chair of the Woodbury County Extension Council, the Woodbury County Pork Producers, and the 4-H Livestock Superintendent at the Woodbury County Fair.

And while Lane loved the view from the porch swing, he and Kathy enjoyed memorable trips to Brazil, China, Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, Scotland, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Alaska, and Hawaii.

Lane was lucky in his final days to be surrounded by many family and friends. He is survived by his wife Kathy; his mother Mary Lou (Sargent) Tabke; his children and grandchildren Jennifer and TJ Vit (Robbie-11, Joe-11, Tommy-7) of Duncombe, IA; Brad and Katy Tabke (Ashe-17 and Ila-13) of Shakopee, MN; and Brianne and Grant Streck (Kadence-14, Adelyn-12 and Henry-7) of Moville, IA. He will also be remembered by his siblings Garrett and Rita Tabke of Moville, IA; Shawn and Mary Lou Tabke of McCook Lake, SD; Brett and Erika Tabke of Austin, TX; Suzanne and Dennis Desy of Sioux City, IA; mother-in-law Glenda Truesdell of Remsen, IA; siblings-in-law Sara and Scott Happe of Burleson, TX; Rick Smith of Fort Worth, TX; Jeff Smith of Mansfield, TX, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Lane was preceded in death by his father Dwight, father-in-law Richard Smith, and sister-in-law Cathie Smith.
