Hustedt, age 71, of Galva, passed away on Wednesday, April 02, 2025 at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community of Storm Lake.  A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 07, 2025 at 11:00 AM at the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Galva with the Rev. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed towards Camp Okoboji in memory of Lanny.

Lanny Rae Hustedt went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 2, 2025 at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake, IA after battling aggressive stomach cancer since September 2023. He was born on November 19, 1953 in Storm Lake, Iowa to Alverne and Phyllis (Winterhof) Hustedt. Lanny grew up on the Hustedt farm north of Galva and later welcomed siblings Carol and Randy to the family. Lanny’s specialties included teasing his siblings, being the designated cultivator driver, walking beans, baling hay and shelling corn.

Lanny graduated from the Galva High School - Class of 1972 and was proud to share that it was the largest graduating class in school history (34 students). His fondest memories were attending Boys State in 1971 and going out for track his senior year - where he would go on to hold the school record in the 2-mile.

After high school, Lanny went to college at the University of Northern Iowa where he double majored in finance and accounting. He loved listening to albums on his stereo in the dorms, and was known for having some of the best (or loudest) tunes around. His favorite songs were “Stairway to Heaven” and “My Way” which is rather fitting if you knew him. After graduating from UNI, he went to work for the IRS in the Intelligence Division for two years. He then went on to begin his beloved career in Elevator Management and Grain Merchandising. Lanny worked at AGP in Eagle Grove and elevators in Sanborn, Remsen, and Pierson. He made great friends along the way and still kept in touch with his old coworkers.

Lanny enjoyed talking about how proud he was of his nieces and nephews, traveling, politics, and attending sporting events - especially Galva-Holstein football games. Notably, you would find him standing along the fence with a bright yellow headset, listening to the play-by-play while watching. He also enjoyed attending Iowa State games and cheering on the UNI Panthers. Lanny was a Sunday School teacher at Galva St. John’s Lutheran Church for 35 years.

After retiring in December 2019, Lanny moved back to Galva where he was active on the Galva City Council and Ida County Republicans Committee. You could almost always find him driving around checking fields, being “farm manager” while helping Randy and Joel, and always giving us his witty and sometimes sarcastic one liners or words of wisdom.

Left to cherish his memory are brother, Randy Hustedt of Galva, IA; sister, Carol (Mark) Scoles of Spring Green, WI; nephew Travis (Melissa) Scoles, niece Sara (Todd) Krumholz, nephew Joel (Jordan) Hustedt, nephew Chad (Jennifer) Hustedt, nephew Keith (Cori) Hustedt and niece Dana Hustedt; great nieces and nephews; Owen and Taylor Scoles, Harper and Joey Krumholz, Eve and Jett Hustedt, Paisley, Presley and Grady Hustedt and Kason, Scotti Lee and Kade Hustedt; and many beloved friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Alverne and Phyllis; nephew, Brandon Scoles; sister-in-law, Karla Hustedt; uncle, Gaylen (Pat) Winterhof and aunt, Sheryl Drury.

“When all are one, and one is all. To be a rock and not to roll.”
