Larry Eugene Volkert

Larry E. Volkert, age 74, of Holstein, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at the MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center of Sioux City.  A private family funeral service will be held at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein with the Pastor Bob Lewis officiating.  There will be no visitation.  Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Dessel-Schmidt Post #225 of Holstein.

Larry Eugene Volkert was born October 17, 1946 to Lawrence and Ina (Dreeszen) Volkert in Holstein, Iowa.  He was a lifelong resident of Battle Township in rural Holstein.  Larry joined the National Guard in Ida Grove in 1966 and was a member of the 133rd Infantry.  In May of 1968 during the Vietnam War, he was activated to regular service and was based in Colorado Springs, CO until August of 1969.  He was a member of the American Legion Dessel-Schmidt Post #225 of Holstein.

Larry was united in marriage to Janet Heeney on April 17, 1970.  The couple was blessed with two children, Audra and Ashley.

Larry was engaged in farming and feeding cattle with his brother Lane.  He loved conservation and incorporating that into his work.  One of his favorite pastimes was taking tractor rides.  Larry was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein.  He enjoyed volunteering and being involved in the community and church activities.  He liked traveling, chatting with anyone young and old, and time spent with friends and family.  Larry loved spending time with his grandchildren, logging many hours of bleacher time watching Breanne and Griffin’s activities, riding in the tractor or semi with his “little buddy” Clayton, and wrestling on the floor with Max.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet; daughters, Audra (Sean) O’Neill of Wall Lake, IA and Ashley (Mitch) Trost of Holstein, IA; grandchildren, Breanne O’Neill, Griffin O’Neill, Clayton Trost and Maxwell Trost; siblings, Lane (Lori) Volkert of Holstein, IA and Larane (Larry) Campbell of Chino Valley, AZ; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Ina Volkert and parents-in-law, Eugene and Ella Heeney.
