Lyle W. Buell was born January 24, 1929 in rural Holstein, Iowa to William and Elna (Goettsch) Buell. He was baptized in the Methodist church in Schaller, Iowa. He lived in rural Galva when he attended and graduated from Galva High School in 1946.
Lyle farmed with his father until he left to serve in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. During that time he was a member of the 341st Engineer Panel Bridge Company in Korea and earned the rank of Sergeant. After he returned from the service, Lyle returned home to farming.
He was united in marriage to Melba “Jane” Kostis on October 1, 1960 at the United Presbyterian Church in Morningside, Sioux City, Iowa. To this union two sons were born, Jeffery Lyle Buell and Timothy Lyle Buell. Lyle loved farming but his family was number one. He started custom farming before he was married and raised Black Angus Cattle and hogs, corn, beans and oats. Lyle also farmed in Schaller and later in Galva. He never really retired from farming; he was up and out early to help his son in his later years. In 1994 he built his retirement home in Holstein.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Schaller and served as Grand Master and was held 32nd Degree on March 26, 1966. Lyle was a lifetime member of the VFW where he served as Commander in 1964, was a member of the American Legion of Holstein and was an Abu Bekr Shriner in Sioux City. He was active in the community of Galva and served on the Union Elevator Board. He loved country music and dancing on Saturday nights. He enjoyed trips to Canada fishing, playing cards, pool and traveling. Lyle loved gambling with his friend Vance Schubert. He enjoyed his granddaughters, Natalie and Ashley and watching them in their sports.
