Orin Leroy Bruns was born December 17, 1924 in Galva, Iowa to George and Sylvia (Kretzmeir) Bruns. He graduated from Fairview High School in Alta, IA. After graduation he entered the Navy and was Seaman First Class from January 1945 to July 1946.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy Fritz on September 7, 1947 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alta. To this union three children were born. Orin was baptized and confirmed on February 4, 1948.
Orin was a longtime farmer, farming seven miles north of Alta for ten years until moving north of Storm Lake in 1958. In addition to farming, he worked part time at Dahl Lumber Yard in Alta then at Cargill in Alta. He retired from farming in 1989.
He was an active member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he was involved in many capacities, an active member of the VFW, and a 4-H leader. He enjoyed woodworking and helping friends and family with his carpentry skills. He also enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family. Family was very important to him, and he loved watching his grandchildren in all of their events.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Les Bruns, Delmer Bruns, and George Bruns Jr. Orin is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy of Storm Lake, IA; sons, Dennis and wife Sandy of Cedar Rapids, IA, Roger and wife Barb of Lenexa, KS and Bruce and wife Pam of Estherville, IA; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Tammy, Todd, Emily, Brittany, Lyndsay, and Anna; two great-grandchildren Izaac and Charlie; one brother, Waldo Bruns of NC; and many extended relatives and friends.
