Peter H. Paulsen, age 86, of Holstein, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society of Holstein. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 10:30 AM at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Holstein with the Rev. Matthew Martens officiating. Burial will be at the Holstein Cemetery of Holstein. A visitation will be held on Monday, December 12, 2016 from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM with the family present from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Holstein.
Peter H. Paulsen was born on April 23, 1930 to Heinrich and Maria (Godbersen) Paulsen in Bohmstedt, Germany. He came to America on a boat in March of 1952 when he was 21 and settled in Iowa near his four uncles.
He was united in marriage to Betty Paulsen. To this union three children were born, Julie, Joan and Jerry.
Pete held many jobs throughout his life: a bricklayer, farmer, school bus driver and a church custodian. He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church where he laid the cornerstone of the new St. Paul Lutheran Church addition in 1998. Pete was proud to sing “Silent Night” in German at the Christmas Eve service at St. Paul for many years. He was also a member of the Holstein Kiwanis and played Santa for many years at the Toys for Tots Soup Luncheon. He was the King of Holstein’s Quasquicentennial Celebration in 2007.
Pete is survived by his wife Betty of Holstein, Iowa; daughters, Julie (John) Modrell of Holstein, Iowa and Joan Winebrinner of Pocahontas, Iowa; son, Jerry (Tina) Paulsen of Holstein, Iowa; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Christian Theo Paulsen; sister, Mareichen Andresen; and brother-in-law, Kalle Andresen.
