Phyllis was born on May 30, 1926 to Hugo and Lydia (Schwenk) Ehler in Logan Township, Ida Grove, IA. She was the third of five children. She attended Logan No. 6 school and graduated from Ida Grove High School in May 1943. After graduation, she taught three years in the rural schools in Logan Township. On June 8, 1947, she married Glen Still at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Ida Grove, IA. They were blessed with four children, Jeanette, Beverly, Susan and Robert. Glen and Phyllis’s first year of married life was spent on a farm southeast of Danbury, IA before moving to the farm north of Ida Grove in 1948. They resided there until 1951 and then moved to Galva where they farmed until 1986 before moving to their home in Galva. In her early years, Phyllis was active in 4-H where she served as Ida County 4-H president and later served as a 4-H leader for 24 years with the Logan Stars and the Galva Gals. In 1969 she started her employment at Horn Memorial Hospital as a CNA. She was devoted to giving the best possible care to her hospital patients and home-health care clients. She will be remembered for her special back rubs and strong work ethic. She retired in 2006 at the young age of 80. In her leisure time she loved to work outdoors. If there was a leaf to be raked or a stick to be picked up, she was there. Family and faith were very important to her. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Galva, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was a member of the Ladies Aide. She was also a member of the Galva Auxiliary. She hosted many family dinners and would always make sure that all family members didn’t leave empty handed. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Glen; her parents; daughter, Beverly Tjaden; sister, Sylvia Heilman; and brothers, Vernon and Francis Ehler. Phyllis is survived by three children, Jeanette (Darrell) Ehlers of Holstein, IA, Susan (Steve) Jimmerson of Alta, IA, Robert (Darlene) Still of Galva, IA; 11 grandchildren, Curt Ehlers, Craig Ehlers and Clint Ehlers, Courtney Brink, Kim Shunnarah, Kelly Smith, Kory and Marc Kock, Marty Jimmerson, Wendi Geno and Jessica Jensen; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Velda Lohff of Holstein; and many extended family members.
