Richard passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2021, at the AbiliT Holstein Senior Living of Holstein. There will be no services.
On Saturday evening, May 15, 2021, Richard Kitchen, age 78, of Holstein, passed on at the AbiliT Holstein Senior Living of Holstein. He had been a resident there for the past 4 years.
Richard (Dick) was born at the little hospital in Holstein on October 30, 1942. His parents were Henry (Dick)Kitchen and Irma Bremer Kitchen.
Richard grew up on a farm north of Galva and graduated from Galva High School in 1960. He was the class Valedictorian. He went on to Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from there in 1964 with honors. While at Coe, he played baritone in the college marching band which led to him being able to march in the Inauguration Parade in Washington, D C, for President John F. Kennedy in January, 1961. Music and the sciences remained lifelong interests of his.
From Coe College, Richard began working and studying at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. While there he received Masters Degrees in 3 areas of study, Physics, Math, and Chemistry. This led to teaching employment at the University of Wisconsin, University of Iowa, and Dickenson State University in North Dakota.
The rest of his life was spent in a variety of locations such as Wyoming, South Dakota and finally back to his roots in Galva and Holstein, Iowa.
Preceding him in death are his mother, Irma Bremer Kitchen, and his father, Henry (Dick) Kitchen. He is survived by a brother, Craig Kitchen of Sac City, Iowa, and a sister, Faye Kitchen-Hall of Fallbrook, California.
