Sammy Edward Olson was born May 7, 1934 in a farmhouse one mile east of Cushing. He was the only child of Charles E. Olson (Sam) and Nora Belle Moon. He attended country school in Cushing until 3rd grade when his family moved to a farm in Correctionville. He then went to school at the country school near his home until 8th grade. Sammy attended Correctionville High School but earned his GED in the military. Sammy entered the Army in August of 1956 and went to basic training at Fort Chaffee in Arkansas. He served in the 11th Armored Calvary in Landshut, Germany as an ammo truck driver. Sammy was discharged from the military in August of 1959. After he was discharged he worked for a short time at a Sioux City meat packing plant and then he started farming in 1963 on the family farm, which is now a Century Farm. For 50 years he raised corn, beans and Angus cattle. For a few years he also raised Longhorn cattle. In September 2006 he went to live at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City. There he enjoyed reading his farm magazine, playing wheelchair volleyball and visiting with other residents. Sammy was an animal lover; he owned several cats and dogs throughout his lifetime and they were great sources of comfort for him. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents and several aunts and uncles. He will be missed by many fellow farmers and friends.
