Vera Mae Buckendahl, the daughter of Claude and Laura Pfieffer Peck, was born December 27, 1917, at her parents home in Cherokee County, Iowa, and passed away December 22, 2015, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 97.
Vera was baptized and confirmed at Maryhill. She attended Meriden Community School, graduating in 1935. On November 28, 1940, she was united in marriage to Edwin Buckendahl at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. To this union four children were born: Jerry, Eddie, Jane, and James W. The day after they were married they moved to Venice, California for three years. Vera then moved back to Meriden while Edwin served in the United States Marine Corps. In 1945, when Edwin returned home from his tour of duty, they made their home in Storm Lake, Iowa, and in 1953, they moved to Alta, Iowa.
Vera was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Vera’s faith and religion were a priority in her life. Vera and Edwin enjoyed traveling together in their later years. Most of all, her greatest joy was taking care of her family and home. She cherished the time spent visiting and keeping in touch with those that she knew and loved.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Laura Peck; her husband, Edwin Buckendahl; daughter-in-law Vernie Buckendahl; son-in-law Larry Beckendorf; her brothers and sisters: Wilmer (Helen) Peck; Betty (Bruce) Cranston; Marie (Bob) Sand; and Walter (Penny) Peck; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Maurice Moorman; Willard Lundquist; Clara (Fred) Lullman; Harvey J. (Freida) Buckendahl; and Wilbert (Martha) Buckendahl.
Vera is survived by her children, Jerry Buckendahl of Alta, Iowa; Eddie (Carol) Buckendahl of Enumclaw, Washington, Jane Beckendorf and special friend Kent Paulsen both of Exira, Iowa, James W. (Melody) Buckendahl of Alta; 15 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; her brothers and sisters: Marjorie Lundquist of Meridan, Iowa; Dorothy Moorman of Los Angeles, California; Lester (Mary) Peck of Nampa, Idaho; Joyce (Duane) Anderson of Alta, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
