Verle T. Law

July 8, 1933 — March 16, 2016

Verle Thomas Law was born July 8, 1933 in Correctionville, Iowa to Clifford and Maymee (Wright) Law. He attended grand school in Correctionville until third grade, and then attended Douglas Center Country School. In 1951, Verle graduated from Cushing High School. He was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Cushing where he was baptized and confirmed.

On April 26, 1953 he married Betty Lou Amick in Spencer at the Grace United Methodist Church. They farmed with his parents in rural Cushing for two years, until they moved into Cushing in 1955 to run the telephone office. Later, Verle drove truck for Pat McGuire and then worked for Brower Asphalt Company. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1958 where he worked for Irving Jensen Construction until 1960, when he worked as an engineer at Metz Bakery. He and Betty moved to the farm in 1965 where he farmed until driving truck and working for various earth moving companies in 1985. He won the Ida County Soil Conservation award in 1971 and even in his later years, he still took care of the land. He bought an excavator to keep his farm in top-notch shape; he loved to play in the dirt on the farm.

Tom and Betty loved to dance to country music and they loved to travel, visiting 45 states, China, Mexico and Canada. They also took seven cruises and visited seven Presidential Libraries. He was fond of his cats and his farm dogs were constant companions outside. In the evening, he and Betty played games and played cards; anyone who visited was more than welcome to join in. He also loved having the grandchildren and great-grandchildren come over to play.

Verle was preceded in death by his infant son, Ramsey; his parents, Clifford (Maymee) Law; sisters, Maxine Law and Donna (Paul) Sloan; nephew, Dennis Law; niece, Susan Cody, parents-in-law, Harold (Marie) Amick; step mother-in-law, Lois Amick; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Linda) Amick, Bonnie Law, Rex Fulton, and Robert Queen; and daughter-in-law, Judy Law.
